During his six week residency Derek will engage
with all nationalities at the Camp exploring what
Mount Everest (Sagarmāthā) means to them. The
residency will use the artist’s unique ‘Diary Rooms‘
approach to collate personal experiences through
handwritten ‘postcards from Everest’ to understand
what this place means & why people are there. For
Nepalis the issues of spirituality & conservation are
juxtaposed with making a living from the mountain.
For tourists & international climbers there are issues
of aspiration, money & the treatment of local people,
landscape & cultures. The residency will explore the
tension between the diverse aspects of aspiration,
conservation & spirituality.
The resulting work will be exhibited in Nepal, the UK and the USA.
