ABOUT THE WORK OF THE THREE YOUNG EUROPEAN ARTISTS
IN RESIDENCE AT THE KCAC
Jonas Wijtenburg
In the Netherlands Jonas saw himself as a painter, but this attitude changed suddenly when he started working in Nepal. He started several projects using different materials and media, such as photography, sculpture and installation. His main interest here was concerned about the deep social impact western way of life has on the Nepali society as well as the reaction of Nepali people on tourists' reality in their country. A good example for Jonas' work is how he Applied pictures taken from tourists on life size billboards, placed them in a new street scenario and confronted the Nepali people with a new surreal situation which was actually real.
Wies Olde Riekerink
In the Netherlands Wies graduated in video and installation art, but in Nepal she re-discovered her interest in painting and colors. She is fascinated by the endless possibilities of painting and it's playful and simple way of expressing human feelings through her naive style. This is clearly shown by the paintings representing faces, which seem to be somehow childish but at the same time reduced to essential human figures. Another important aspect in her work is the use of color, which she uses as a challenge, creating strong and tense yet playful contrasts.
Catherine Biocca
In Nepal she started learning Thangka painting and added some of its traditional elements in her paintings. The work made in Nepal is concerned with the human feeling of being alone and at the same time with the need of feeling secure. This is the theme of her oil paintings, in which single persons are shown in lonesome poses, surrounded by weird open spaces with a surreal, far atmosphere. Also in her video installation, "Once upon a time", she deals with the topic of the need of having a home, a shelter, a safe place to get back.
